Once you learn how to make brown butter you are going to want to add it to everything! It is like magic and just makes everything taste better.

Brown Butter in Pan

What is Brown Butter

Brown butter is litterally just butter that you have browned in a pan.  But it has the power to transform a recipe.  The process is simple but the effects are huge! You heat the butter so that the milk solids darken and fall to the bottom of the pan.  You will get an amazing nutty aroma as it melts and browns and you get a better, bolder flavor to the food you add it to.

How to Make Brown Butter

  1.  Heat butter over medium heat.  I like to use a light colored pan because it is easier to watch the color of the butter and when it begins to turn golden brown.

2.  Swirl or stir the butter as it melts so that it cooks evenly.

3. The butter will begin to foam as it melts.  The color will begin to change from yellow to a golden brown.  The milk solids will also begin to separate and fall to the bottom of the pan.  This is where you need to watch it closely.  You will begin to smell the wonderful nutty aroma of brown butter.  When you begin to smell the aroma, you want to remove the pan from the heat and pour the butter into a bowl so it doesn’t continue to cook with the heat of the pan.

4. As you pour the butter into another bowl, try and leave the majority of the milk solids that have formed in the pan.  If it is totally o.k. if some get into the bowl though.  I actually like the flavor that they give to things so I always add some in.

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup butter

Instructions

  • Place butter into a light colored pan and melt over medium heat.
  • As butter begins to melt and foam, swirl pan or stir with a spoon or whisk.
  • As milk solids begin to brown and fall to the bottom of the pan and butter turns a golden brown color, remove pan from heat.
  • Pour butter into another bowl to stop the cooking process. Leave the majority of the dark brown milk solids in the pan.
  • Use brown butter in some of your favorite baked goods or pasta dishes for amazing flavor.

Tips & Notes:

Using a light colored pan to make brown butter is helpful so that you can easily see the color change.
Brown butter will keep for quite a while in the refrigerator or you can freeze it in ice cube trays to use later.

I love brown butter, and I’m sure this is probably a silly question, Leigh Anne, but do you use salted butter for this recipe?
