Why You’ll Love This Recipe

Blueberry Compote is a fancy name for blueberry sauce and is a nice alternative to syrup or jam as it is not as sweet and sugary although there is definitely sugar in it.  It can be served on your favorite breakfast or dessert treat.  It just makes everything taste better and looks fancier and only takes minutes to put together.

What is Compote?

Compote is a topping originating from medieval Europe, made of fruit and sugar. Often spices or flavorings are also added in such as vanilla, lemon juice, cinnamon, cloves etc. The ingredients are cooked together and it can be served warm or cold.

Ingredients

  1. Fruit. We used 2 1/2 cups of blueberries but you could use type of berry or fruit. You can use fresh berries or frozen blueberries.
  2. Sugar. Granulated sugar, brown sugar or you can also use maple syrup or honey.
  3. Water
spoonful of blueberry compote

How to make Blueberry compote

It is a simple process and only takes minutes.

  • Combine half of your berries, all the sugar and water in a medium saucepan over medium heat on the stovetop and stir for about 10 minutes or until the berries begin to burst.
  • Add in remaining berries and simmer for another 8-10 minutes. (If you are adding in any flavor add ins, do it now). See below for flavor variations. For a thinner compote, use the back of your spoon to smash more of the berries.
  • Cook until the syrup coats the spoon, it will thicken slightly. The sauce will thicken as it cools.
  • Serve warm or cold.

Pair This With:

  • Pancakes
  • Waffles
  • Vanilla Ice Cream
  • Yogurt
  • Pound Cake
  • Crepes
  • French Toast
  • Cheesecake
  • Oatmeal

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I freeze compote?

Place the cooled blueberry compote in a freezer safe, air tight container. Allow a little space for expansion and freeze for 2-3 months.

How long will it last in the refrigerator?

The compote will last for up to a week if stored in an airtight container in the fridge. Place in the freezer if you need it to last longer.

Can I use other fruit?

It is easy to substitute in other berries or a combination of berries. I’ve used raspberries, strawberries, blackberries, etc.

Do you serve blueberry compote warm or cold?

It’s up to you. I love it served warm over ice cream, pancakes or waffles. If I am serving it with yogurt I like to serve it chilled or room temperature.

Tips For Making Easy Blueberry Compote

  1. You can use fresh blueberries or frozen berries. No need to thaw the fruit, it will thaw as it cooks.
  2. Create some fun flavor variations:

Almond or vanilla extract. Use 1 tsp of extract
Lemon juice. Use 1 tsp fresh lemon juice and 1 tsp lemon zest.
Cinnamon. Add in a cinnamon stick or 1/2 tsp of ground cinnamon.

Amazing, I added a little bit of corn starch to thicken it up, and it turned out beautifully!
