Bananas Foster Trifle is a delicious dessert that has layers of goodness.  A shortbread cookie layer is topped with custard and delicious Bananas Foster sauce!

bowl of bananas foster

This recipe for Bananas Foster Trifle is a fun and delicious twist on two classic desserts. Bananas Foster is bananas cooked in a cinnamon sugar suaceserved over vanilla ice cream. And a trifle is a pretty layered dessert, traditionally made with fruit, pound cake and custard. For this recipe we are layering the bananas and sauce in a trifle with homemade custard and buttery shortbread cookies.

How To Make Custard

  • Bring milk and cream to a simmer on low heat.
  • Mix together sugar and cornstarch in a bowl. Add in egg yolks and mix well.
  • Slowly add some of the warm milk into the egg mixture, stirring so the egg doesn’t cook. Then, add in the remaining egg mixture.
  • Add in vanilla.  Return mixture to saucepan and stir until thickened.
  • Chill.

Assemble Your Trifle

  • First, pick your container.  I decided to go with individual serving dishes. The round shortbread cookies were the perfect fit .

  • Next, you will add a layer of homemade custard. You can also use vanilla pudding, but pudding is much sweeter than custard. Add about 2 Tbsp of custard over the shortbread cookie.

  • Next, add a layer of the delicious Bananas Foster.
  • Repeat each step again, adding another layer of shortbread, custard and Bananas Foster.
