Why You’ll Love This Recipe!

Low and Slow: The best way to cook short ribs in low and slow so that makes them the perfect thing to put in the slow cooker! These slow cooker short ribs will cook for 4-6 hours on low.

Delicious Taste: These short ribs are fall of the bone tender and have amazing flavor thanks to the herb/spice rub, tomato sauce and balsamic vinegar.

What is a Short Rib?

Short ribs come from the beef chuck of the animal, and consist of the ends of the ribs near the breastbone. These ribs are shorter than traditional ribs and although not as tender they have great flavor.

ingredients for slow cooker short ribs

Ingredients Needed

  • Short Ribs
  • Rub, a combination of salt, dried rosemary, dried sage, garlic powder, onion powder, oregano, paprika and black pepper (see recipe below)
  • Olive Oil, you can also use canola or vegetable oil.
  • Tomato Sauce, canned

Tips from Leigh Anne

  1. I prefer bone in short rib, but you can also use boneless. You could also use chuck Roast (cut into 2 inch pieces),
Beef Back Ribs, Beef Shank, or Brisket for this recipe.
  2. Don’t skip the searing or braising step for these slow cooker short ribs. This gives the meat a nice deep, caramelized flavor. Spending five minutes doing this will make a difference!
  3. There will be delicious leftover drippings so don’t let them go to waste. You can easily turn them into gravy by making a roux with 2 Tbsp of butter, and flour. THen add the strained broth and stir over medium heat until mixture begins to thicken.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I add vegetables in with the short ribs?

Yes, you can. Potatoes, parsnips, or carrots would be delish. They will take less time to cook so I would add them in the last hour or so of cooking. Be sure to cut them into same size pieces for even cooking.

Can I cook this in the Instant Pot?

This recipe works well in the Instant Pot. Use the saute feature to braise the meat. The Instant Pot needs at least 1 cup of liquid so add in 1/2 cup of beef broth. Use the manual high pressure function and set it to high. Cook the short ribs for 45 minutes, do a 10 minute natural release.

What does it mean to “braise”?

Braising is the process of browning the meat over high heat to seal in all those yummy juices. It is also called searing.

Should I use Bone In or Boneless Short Ribs?

Should I use Bone In or Boneless Short Ribs?

What is the best way to store leftover short ribs?

Keep any leftovers in an airtight container for 2-3 day sin the refrigerator. I like to reheat them in the microwave.

Why You’ll Love This Recipe!

Perfect for a small gathering. A turkey breast is the perfect solution when you are not feeding a crowd for the holidays!

More Oven Space. Cooking it in the slow cooker also frees up the oven for all the other things you will be making and gives you a tender turkey breast.

Extra White Meat for a crowd. A slow cooker turkey breast isn’t just an option for small gatherings.  This also works well if you are hosting an extra large group.  The turkey breast provides some extra white meat to help fill your platter and leaves enough to make turkey sandwiches.

Tips from leigh Anne

  1. Have a good instant-read thermometer on hand and always check the temperature of your meat before serving. Turkey should have an internal temperature of 165 degrees F. Insert the thermometer into the thickest part of the turkey breast to check the temperature.
  2. In addition to the onion soup mix you can add some sprigs of fresh herbs if you like, such as thyme or rosemary. You can also make your own seasoning mix instead of using the onion soup mix if you prefer.
  3. To crisp up the skin of the crockpot turkey breast, once the it is cooked, transfer it to a baking dish or roasting pan and put it under the broiler for a few minutes to get that yummy crispy skin. Watch the turkey breast closely and broil it just until the turkey skin starts to turn golden brown.
  4. Serve the turkey with some homemade gravy using this recipe.

Make perfectly shredded chicken every time in the slow cooker!

Why You’ll Love This Recipe!

I love to keep slow cooker shredded chicken on hand. It can be used so many ways, on top of a salad, in a soup, on pasta, in a casserole, rolled up in a tortilla and lots of other ways.  If you have chicken on hand you always have something for dinner.

Cooking chicken in the slow cooker gives it a nice tender texture. The process is so easy and the flavor is great too. And it is easy to customize the flavor of your chicken by adding more seasoning. Add in taco seasoning for a Mexican shredded chicken or add in oregano, basil and or Italian seasoning to use the chicken in Italian dishes such as pasta or on pizza.

Shredded Chicken in the Slow Cooker

Ingredients Needed

  • Chicken Breasts. I use boneless skinless chicken breasts. You could also use boneless skinless chicken thighs.
  • Water or Chicken Broth
  • Kosher Salt and Black Pepper. You can also use your favorite seasoning salt or any combination of seasonings you prefer.

How to Make Slow Cooker Shredded Chicken

  • Place chicken into the crock pot with some salt and pepper or desired seasoning.
  • Pour in 1/2 cup of water or chicken broth. If your chicken is frozen you won’t need the liquid.
  • Cook on low for four hours. It may take longer if frozen. Do not overcook the chicken, the texture changes when it is overcooked.
  • Cook just until it is tender enough to shred (3-4 hours on low or 2-3 hours on high) and then remove it from the slow cooker onto a cookie sheet or cutting board.
Shredded Chicken in the Slow Cooker
  • Use two forks shred the chicken. Return the chicken to the leftover liquid to absorb some of the juices.

Tips from leigh Anne

  1. Use other seasonings in addition to the salt and pepper to give the chicken even more flavor. Some of my favorites are paprika, garlic powder, chili powder, oregano, onion powder, or taco seasoning to use chicken in your favorite Mexican recipes.
  2. Another option is to add a jar of salsa in with the chicken while it is cooking for a Mexican shredded chicken.
  3. To easily shred the chicken you can use two forks and pull the chicken apart or place the chicken in a stand mixer and using the paddle attachment shred the chicken. My favorite way is to use two forks.
Shredded Chicken in the Slow Cooker

Frequently Asked Questions

How much shredded chicken is one chicken breast?

Depending on the size of your chicken breast, you will get about 2 cups of chicken per chicken breast.

What is the best way to store shredded chicken?

Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator or the freezer. I usually put it into two cup servings sizes for our reduced size family and freeze it that way. It will keep in the fridge for 3-4 days and in the freezer for up to 3 months.

Can I make shredded chicken in the Instant Pot?

You can, just follow the directions in this post.

My chicken is tough and dried out?

If this happens, you have cooked it too long. Cook it just until it is cooked through, tender and comes apart easily when shredding.

Why You’ll Love This Recipe

Pantry Staple Ingredients: The recipe uses many ingredients you probably already have in your pantry and is so quick to put together, slicing the beef is the hardest part.

Cooking it in the slow cooker eliminates needing to marinade the beef and you end up with the most tender and flavorful beef ever!

Steaming the broccoli and adding it in at the end ensures you have nice nice and crisp tender broccoli!

Frequently Asked Questions

What other cut of meat can I use?

I often will use flank steak instead of top sirloin. Be sure to cut the flank steak across the grain into 2 inch long pieces

Can I use frozen broccoli for this recipe?

I don’t recommend it. Frozen broccoli will give you a mushy texture rather than a nice crisp texture. If you do use it, add it in frozen the last 20-30 minutes of cook time. The frozen broccoli will also release water and will make your sauce thinner. Fresh broccoli is the way to go!

Is beef and broccoli spicy?

If you only use 1/4 tsp of red chili flakes it doesn’t have much spice. You can add in more red chili flakes if you want more spice or just leave it out all together if you are sensitive to the spice.

How long will leftover crock pot beef and broccoli last?

Kept stored in an airtight container in the fridge it will last 2-3 days.

Can I freeze beef and broccoli?

It can be frozen in a zippered freezer bag for up to 3 months. I recommend not freezing it with the broccoli but adding in fresh steamed broccoli to the beef before serving as frozen broccoli is mushy when thawed.

Why You’ll Love This Recipe!

There was a local Hawaiian restaurant in Portland that served a dish called Shoyu Chicken, shoyu is Japanese for soy sauce. This menu item was always the first thing to sell out every day so I decided I needed to learn to make it at home. It couldn’t be easier and it’s just as delicious!

Also called Hawaiian Chicken, this dish is cooked in the slow cooker in a mixture soy sauce, chicken broth, brown sugar, ginger, garlic, honey and onion.

You can use boneless, skinless chicken breasts instead but they do have a tendency to dry out quicker than chicken thighs so don’t overcook them. Most slow cooker chicken recipes cook the chicken for too long and you end up with tough or rubbery chicken, it only needs about four hours on low.
